TFL Refractory Industry Glossary

  • Ceramic Fiber Blanket

    Manufactured spun ceramic fiber, needed to provide handling strength for high-temperature insulation applications. 

  • Dimensional Tolerance

    The amount a specific shape is allowed to vary.

  • Insulating Firebrick

    A special type of brick that can handle high temperatures. Often used to line fireplaces, fireboxes, furnaces, and kilns.

  • Monolithic Refractories

    Refers to all unshaped refractory products.

  • Plastic Refractories

    An unfired and formable material that can be used for both original installations and patching.

  • Precast Refractory Shapes

    Precast refractory shapes are pre-fired in our facilities so that they can be put to use right away on site in high-temperature applications.

  • Precast Shapes

    A refractory product that cannot be pressed as a result of the shape dimension and or quantities of the product.

  • Refractory

    Refractory material is resistant to decomposition by heat, pressure, chemicals, and retains strength and form through extremely high temperatures.

  • Refractory Lining

    A protective layer installed in the furnace to protect the structure from high temperatures.
